1. US Cities UHI Effect. Link to climate central. Checked. 2. Main UHI effects in my area. Two photos uploaded. In many areas of San Francisco extended periods of intense sunlight could potentially raise the field temperatures to a level that can contribute to urban heat island effect. With the numerous micro-climates in San Francisco, some neighborhoods would be impacted greater than others. 3. Measures I would propose. Increase shade around your home. Planting trees and other vegetation lowers surface and air temperatures by providing shade and cooling through evapotranspiration. Install green roofs. Install cool roofs. Use energy-efficient appliances and equipment. Check on your friends, family, and neighbors. 4. Policies in my area to reduce UHI effect. Green Building Program and Standards. Cool Roofs; Green Roofs; Trees and Vegetation; Cool Pavements. California Green Building Standards Code – The 2010 California Green Building Standards Code, referred to as CALGreen, went into effect on January 1, 2011. The Code covers residential and commercial buildings, and provides 52 nonresidential mandatory measures and an additional 130 provisions for optional use. There are several voluntary measures that relate to heat island mitigation, including shading, cool pavement, and cool roof technologies.
