FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2019-11-07 by Sibilla Bondolfi
The visible information on this picture is a driving ban in an old town alley in Berne, Switzerland. The invisible information, that can be extracted out of this visible information, are the following: 1. A driving ban in the old city has a great impact on shops, restaurants and other businesses. Some may lose money because of the driving ban. 2. A driving ban in the old city has a great influence on traffic flows and on how people move around. Pedestrians might be encouraged to walk further distances, because it is more pleasant without traffic. And this could be good for some shops, because they profit from casual customers. Once the effects of the driving ban on the shops in the old town have been evaluated over a longer period of time, conclusions could be drawn that are relevant for urban planning. If the experiences are the same as in other cities, this could lead to knowledge that will be useful in future decisions. If it turns out that shops not only suffer from the driving ban, but even gain new customers, more car-free zones could be planned in future urban planning to make the city more attractive.
