This image of downtown Pittsburgh is a visual timeline of how building materials used to be local but are now sourced globally. In front is the edifice of a historic church built using local stone. Behind it, on the right side of the street, is an office building constructed in the early 1900s using regionally produced brick. The glass building far in the distance, contains building materials sourced nationwide and across the globe. All three of these buildings are within a stone's throw from each other, coexisting in a modern city, yet were constructed using vastly different means and materials.
