In this example of a street in the center of Porto Alegre (a city of 1.5 million people), the public and private uses of the space and the transportation flows are made more explicit. Due among others to the very high local concentration of institutional buildings (most not open to the public) and few commercial activities, there is little movement in the street and a waste of important, very well located space. At the same time, a very large share of the street is dedicated exclusively to private (vehicular) transport and parking - so much that the bike lane is single way only. This information should be taken into consideration in a new urban planning to increase the street life.
