1. I compared four municipalities, including Las Vegas in the Climate Central site. Las Vegas was ranked number 1 for having the most significant differences between urban and rural temperatures due to its geography and summer temperature. 2. Union City UHI effect is striking in Bergenline Avenue where congestion of cars and buses run throughout the day. Also, Bergenline Avenue is a commercial street where most stores have a high usage of AC during the summer. Unfortunately, there is no data or graphs regarding the UHI effect in my town. Union City closes rural neighbor is Chester, NJ, with a smaller population and less diverse uses, but is abundant in trees. 3. To reduce the UHI of my city, I would focus on Bergenline Avenue by increasing tree canopy to give cooler summers and diminish the AC usage in stores. Additionally, parking lots between buildings concentrate solar and thermal radiation, so I would make rising parking lots, and change the pavement to lighter tone for a higher SRI. 4. Union City Master Plan Reexamination Report adopted in March 2O18 describes planting of 250 trees per year, addressing the UHI effect and has been active over the past two years.
