If a habitat or neighborhood does not feel safe, I would start by assessing the situation and existing data. For example in Morocco a start-up called Finemchi collects data on spaces, where women do not feel safe. Also, there are phone services to call when you do not feel safe. While talking to a person on this phone line, they can increase your sense of safety. Also, they would contact the police if you find yourself in trouble. As the next step I would further analyse the “dangerous spots” in the neighborhood. I would encourage citizens to be part of this process through an active dialogue (for example, a weekly participatory event). Then, I would source for design solutions to best address the issues found. For this step I would create a ‘call for application’ to companies to submit their ideas and best-practice services/products. Lastly, I would create a shortlist of possible (feasible in terms of costs and resources for the implementation) design solutions. This shortlist would again be discussed with local citizens and they would be invited to vote on their favorite solution. The implementation again would have cititsens participation.
