In the rural areas, people used local materials to construct houses. Local materials include thatch and cow dung. However due to advancements in construction processes and construction materials, the construction of buildings include components of a globalized economy. This is a photo construction site in Mombasa, Kenya. In the photo, we can see some of the building materials including wood, cement, steel rods and coral blocks. Out of these materials: Wood can be obtained locally. cement is also produced in the country, Kenya. And coral blocks are mined in Mombasa itself. However steel is imported in Kenya. Only Egypt and South Africa produce steel in Africa.
