Energy, Food, Water a) Energy: Almost all the energy for the city of Biel is imported (flows). This applies in particular to the fossil fuels oil and gas. Only a very small part of the electricity comes from local sources (hydropower, PV). The city has a lake as a stock, which is to be used in the future for heat and cold production. Production from PV will also increase. In addition, electric mobility will massively change the stocks and flows in the energy sector of the city. The energy is used for mobility, households (heat, lighting, appliances etc.), services and industry; and therefore turned into motion, comfort, services and products. b) Food: As in most cities, food is largely imported and sold in supermarkets, markets, restaurants, etc. (flows). Partly there are small gardens for fruits and vegetables. The lake with its abundance of fish can also be regarded as a stock. In the city the food is consumed or processed further. The products are either consumed in the city or exported again. Those foods that are not consumed are disposed of (garbage, or compost). In the future, more local food could be produced, or less thrown away.
