2.In Geneva the average temperature has increased by 3 ͦC since 1990. In comparison to the rural neighboring areas it is also 2-4 ͦC warmer, throughout the year. https://www.ge.ch/statistique/graphiques/affichage.asp?filtreGraph=02_02&dom=1 In the city image, we see that the area is densely urbanized. Buildings and asphalt streets capture and reflect solar radiation, large streets leave building surfaces exposed, and eliminate the buoyancy effect while increasing individual building’s cooling demands. Moreover the absence of significant vegetation eliminates the possibility of shading. In contrast in the rural setting, nature is predominant. The few settlements that exist occupy little surface, use light materials and don’t affect the overall temperature of the area. 3.I would propose that new urban plans follow high aspect ratios of street canyon configuration, to increase the buoyancy effect during low wind speeds and to minimize the entrapment and reflection of solar radiation. 4.My local community is aiming to reduce individual motorized transportation and to promote public transport and soft mobility, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to minimize the UHI effect. The results are not visible yet, but I strongly believe that a temperature drop will be noticeable in the city center within the coming years.
