FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2019-08-06 by Ashwin Abraham
VISIBLE INFORMATION: 1. A massive tree next to the temple 2. Mixture of uses: residential, religious, commercial side by side. 3. Building form: 3-4 floors, no setbacks, no trees or other nature in between. 4. Tarred and smooth road 5. Lack of people using the space (at 6am) 6. Fairly clean 7. Lots of grills on doors of temple and building to the right. INVISIBLE INFORMATION 7. A perception of robbery being a risk in this area. 1. and 3. Economic needs have overpowered the need to have nature in the city. Only the religious respect for the temple has outweighed this economic pressure. At the same time the heights of the buildings are low and footprints large which point to lack of building regulations by the government being the cause of this unhealthy building pattern. KNOWLEDGE (from 1 and 3): Poor regulations lead to a "tragedy of the commons" where everyone does what is best for himself in the narrowest sense, which results in the destruction of the common property, in this case greenery, access to good ventilation and natural lighting.
