IMAGE: Flows of traffic at Ulsoor, Bengaluru. The 3 most important stocks that flow through the urban system are: 1) Vehicular Traffic Lack of efficient public transport results in a huge no of private vehicles being used for daily travel. 45% of all daily trips are carried out on 1% of the total vehicles ( the public bus service). The perception of the problem is skewed. The government keeps trying to transport vehicles more efficiently rather than transporting people. Solution: Improve the bus system with better bus shelters, more frequency of buses, better last mile connectivity of homes in narrow streets. 2) Water: Bangalore gets enough rain to meet its water requirement. However none of it is used (apart from the part that becomes groundwater). All of its sewage is discharged away from the city. All of its water is imported from a river 200km away. Solution: Re use atleast 50% of waste water and rainwater. All of this cities water problems will be forgotten. 3)Food: Is imported from the hinterlands, flowing through a system of middlemen, reaching markets where homemakers purchase and cook it. Very little urban farming occurs as the cost does not yet justify it.
