Image: Ulsoor Lake, Bengaluru. Untreated water causes plant growth on surface. Neglect of waterbodies of my city have resulted in them being regarded as nuicances and filled up to make ground for buidlings. My city has developed organically. None of its systems have been comprehensively planned. Examining its water, Bangalore gets its water from 100s of kms away from Kaveri River, for which it disputes constantly with neighbouring states. At the same time it has filled 80% of its lakes with buildings, destroying its natural water resource. None of its waste water is reused. A better solution for water would be regeneration of its lakes as landscaped urban zones, complete with wetlands for purification of sewage and commercial/ park activities along the edge. Public space creation, waste water filtration, water table regenration and negation of urban heat islands must all be rolled together into one concentrated effort. This multi benefit project would generate public goodwill resulting in politicians pushing for its implimentation. Isolated solutions to each systemic problem will only cause more problems in other systems.
