The photo shows Katipunan Avenue, the establishments on the right, and the Ateneo de Manila University Campus on the left. The photo shows the land cover disparity between the greener campus grounds and the heavily built-up areas. As a community near universities, a lot of amenities such as restaurants, residences, and other service establishments are present to cater students. A large thoroughfare for vehicles is apparent in the photo. One can also observe the sidewalks too narrow for a bustling community with lot of foot traffic along with the density of vehicles passing through Katipunan Avenue. Delving deeper, some invisible information can be extracted from the photo. With the proximity of a large and busy road to residential areas, one can assess the health effects of the thoroughfare to the resident of Katipunan. Information such as the effect of noise and air pollution can be studied. Information such as where vehicular hazards to pedestrians are highest can also be assessed. Looking at hazardous areas to pedestrians, GIS and modeling can map out those areas with the aid of available data. Assessing the risk from the potential hazards could provide knowledge for increasing safety and future planning of the community.
