This is taken from a mangrove park in north Jakarta. The picture shows the contrast between construction as part of the globalised economy, and the construction as a localised activity. In the distance is a modern high-rise building made of steel and cement, while in the foreground is the bamboo bridge and wooden building. The bamboo and wood are local materials, while the materials for the high-rise are sourced both domestically and abroad. For cement, domestic production has increased with heavy foreign direct investments from foreign cement companies and cement imports have gone down. Steel, on the other hand, is largely imported given the limited domestic supply. Importing steel is much cheaper than manufacturing it locally.
