Uploaded on 2019-07-25 by Amanuel Behailu
The photo of this place is taken from the largest open-air market in Africa. Specifically known as merkato. Information visible on this picture are information such as centrality, traffic congestion, diversity of functions, disorganization of pedestrian and vehicular flow patterns and so on. From these we can extract invisible information such as (1) work flow patterns from the unloading(manufacturing) and displaying of a product or service to the purchasing and loading stages. And (2) commuting patterns of vehicles and pedestrians in and out and also with in the market area. Therefore, by considering the first invisible information for example, we can extract invisible knowledge and contribute to the planning of a more livable and functional urban spaces. By analyzing understanding all the stages of all product and service categories and their work flow we can be able to decide on major urban planning and urban designing parameters such as accessibility, zoning and land use. By doing so, we are able to create a more organized, less chaotic, safe, secure and productive market environment.
