Townsville is hot in summer and warm to cool in winter. It is also a very sunny area and relatively dry for a tropical region. The city area is mostly concrete, the banks of the creek have been denuded of a lot of mangrove, there is limited green public space, during the summer/wet season there is a lot of run off, occasional flooding, and lots of debris is washed into the waterways. Townsville is a city where driving is for some people the only way to get around. The entire city needs to be transformed… public transport needs to be much better (currently old, smelly buses are the only offering) – we need an integrated system that has bus, rail and ferry options all integrated, and with the opportunity for people to walk and cycle to transport connection points. The banks of the creeks and main river that run through town need to be revegetated (floods often strip the banks of vegetation, but little replanting is done), city streets need far more plantings.. avenue trees, gardens and raised planter beds, and swales (rather than just stormwater drains) to better manage water flows.
