1. I have carefully checked the temperature difference between US cities and rural areas. 2. The main UHI effects i can identify in my area are: - Temperature difference: The area just out of city is cooler and more livable. This can be observed even in the river sides of the city where there is more vegetation cover. - Vegetation cover: Nairobi is green compared to other cities but still the city is less green than the rural which makes it hard to find shade which in turn bring UHI effect. - mandatory need for indoor temperature regulator: as the city is getting very hot, usually their is a need to cool office spaces 3. Probable solutions i suggest are: - vegetation: even though the city is green, trees are not directly besides streets which makes streets very hot and irresistible. Pedestrian shade is rarely found in Nairobi. - proper pedestrian paths to walk - Bicycle ways must be constructed to increase bicycle commuters - developing the public transport 4. I have observed policy developments to increase bicycle use in Nairobi which is advocated by the UN and the government.
