FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2019-07-04 by Tricia
Three of the most important stocks and flows in Fountain Hills, AZ include: energy, capital and people. Energy is generated from nuclear, fossil fuel, hydroelectric and steam sources. A small, but growing quantity of renewable energy is generated. Energy demand peaks during the summer months and drops significantly in spring and fall. Existing sources of energy production present risks in terms of carbon emissions as well as nuclear wastes. In the future, more sustainable solar and wind energy sources could be used. However, the energy distribution and storage infrastructure would also need to be updated. Finally, demand for energy could be modified via changes in building codes and techniques. In Fountain Hills, capital has historically been derived from new construction fees. In the future, property taxes, service fees and bond funds will be needed to maintain existing streets, public buildings and other infrastructure. Finally, the Fountain Hills population is in constant flux as this "snowbird" town experiences a 20% decrease in the number of resident "people" every summer. In the future, as the overall population increased, is will provide a more stable economic environment for local businesses.
