Q2 I’m a Canadian national residing in Doha, Qatar. Basically the country is a desert, with very mild winters, and very hot and sunny summers. There is an urban heat island in the city of Doha, located in the main cities like Westbay, Lusail and Al Wakra, and this is due to: The desert environment Extensive use of air conditioning Heat trap by the buildings in the city Less vegetation First image shows the Westbay in Doha, a business hub showing the excessive towers and construction, and is congested on a daily basis. Second image shows Education City, a developing area full of universities and institutions with excessive green and open spaces. Q3 There are several heat island reduction approaches in my opinion and they are: -Increased urban plantation -Rooftop gardens -Reflective roofs -Alternate pavements: Reflective pavement Q4 The Urban Planning and Development Authority in Qatar drafted a master plan involving several urban design projects with an emphasis on downtown master planning and has given priority to landscaping, urban parks and planting trees in urban spaces. Options such as light-coloured residential roofs and cool pavements are being considered among other measures.
