FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2019-06-11 by M.H. - Toronto, Ontario
Here is a beautiful picture of Toronto's city scape at night, taken from the terrace of my apartment. The city is undergoing rapid development and has been in the recent years. While this is not the total cityscape of Toronto, there is a lot to gather from this photo. One can notice the light pollution a city can produce at night, by simply looking at the horizon. This is an example of something going from invisible to visible. During the day time, people do not notice the amount of light pollution a city generates because it is not dark. At nighttime however, it is a different case and this phenomenon can be found in different cities all over the world. Another thing that is invisible is the amount of energy being used to power the city. By simply looking at this photo one can notice all of the electricity powering buildings, lights, streetlights, etc. But what they can not directly see are the energy flows to make this lighting possible. Where does Toronto get its energy supply? Is there more than one location? These are all the invisible aspects to the energy situation of this photo.
