FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2019-04-07 by Roderick Parsons
1) Identification of Stocks and Flows (i) Water (ii) Consumer Goods (iii) Fuel 2) Description (i) WATER flows in the Umngeni River are converted to stocks in dams, from where the water flows to users in the city. Wastewater is generated and then flows as sewage to be treated at the Darvill Wastewater Works (sewage stock) and then discharged as a flow in the Umsunduzi River. (ii) CONSUMER goods are trucked from Durban (flow) and stored in warehouses and chain stores (stocks). The goods are transported (flows) to users and converted into solid waste, which then flows to the landfill site as a permanent stock. (iii) FUEL flows to the city via pipelines or trucks from the refineries in Durban. The fuel is then stored at filling stations (stocks) and then temporarily in vehicle fuel tanks (stocks) at then burnt and dissipated (flow) into the atmosphere as gas. 3) Future changes (i) More efficient water usage and pipe leak reduction can decrease the storage (stock) requirements in the dams. (ii) Improved recycling of waste can decrease the landfill (stock) requirements and also the requirements of importing goods (flows) from Durban. (iii) Infrastructure for electrical cars can decrease fuel flow requirements.
