The attached photo shows construction activities for the upgrading of structures to handle reject coal at the Vale Moatize Coal Mine in Mozambique. The concrete structures consist of aggregate from local quarries and reinforcing steel imported from South Africa. Similarly, the wire gabion baskets in the foreground were probably manufactured in South Africa, but were filled from local stone. The steel sections in the small red bridge were likely purchased from South Africa, but assembled and welded at a shop in the nearby town of Tete. The front-end loader was likely shipped from the USA to Maputo and then transported by road more than 1000 km to the mine. The existing hopper and conveyor structures contain mechanical and electrical equipment that I suspect comes from Germany and the steel itself probably comes from SA. The coal itself is transported by railway, which I understand was built by this Brazilian coal mine and then shipped to China.
