Montreal is continuously under construction. Whether it be new buildings (as shown in the attached picture) or the repair or maintenance of its infrastructure, it is become locally know as the "Orange cone city" because of all of the orange cones the city must place to divert traffic and block off construction zones. This continuous construction requires a lot of materials that cannot be acquired locally. Canada was the sixteenth largest steel importer in the world in 2017*. Steel is required for almost every type of construction whether it be for a road, a residential building, a commercial building or others. Canada imports steel from over 100 different countries so it is hard to pinpoint exactly where these materials were imported from but the likelihood was that like the equipment used in the construction process was manufactured and shipped from the United States. The United States is a source of 54% of Canada's steel importation*. This steel can be found in the rebar, the steel pipes that will be conduits inside the building, the steel decking that will be used for the slabs of the upper floors, and many other applications. *https://www.trade.gov/steel/countries/pdfs/imports-Canada.pdf
