The example I have chosen to illustrate the fact that building materials come from every corner of the world in today’s globalized economy is Chinatown in Adelaide, also known as Moonta Street. The street was transformed in 1989 to look like an Asian shopping and cultural precinct. Two gates were built on each end, the Northern one in 1990 and the Southern one in 2004. It is the latest gate that is especially interesting because it was built with Hemlock wood imported from China and carved in a traditional fashion by Chinese craftsmen. This is a good example that now cities have the mean to import materials from everywhere even if it is to build more traditional looking buildings.
