FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

The attached photo was taken from a hill in a suburban area of Durban, a large port city in South Africa, not far from where I stay. VISIBLE INFORMATION 1) In the foreground are some residential buildings and in the background is the harbour. Also visible are many high rise buildings of the CBD. Tarred roads and electric lighting can be seen. 2) On the far left is a Hindu temple and just behind, a horse-racing track. 3) One can see containers, cranes and industrial buildings around the harbour. INVISIBLE INFORMATION 1) The city is evidently formal and established, but people in the buildings would tell you that the city experiences the regular nationwide power cuts due to major power shortages and the city economy is not as stable as it may appear. Unemployment is also a major problem. 3) Studying the delivery notes at the harbour will reveal that the city services land-locked countries such as Zimbabwe. The power shortage is a threat to the port economy. KNOWLEDGE Considering the chronic power problems, the use of solar panels and the establishment of small businesses that install solar panels may be a solution to power and employment challenges.
