FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2019-03-16 by Laura Kromminga
Berlin Friedrichstraße is a highly frequented Metro station in the heart of Berlin. It is the intersection between U6 and the major East-West S-Bahn axis, which makes results in high passenger fluctuation. The Information visible here is the announcement of the next U6 train going southwards in 2 minutes as well as the high number of people on the platform. The invisible information here is that the train service of U6 is unreliable on many days and the 2 minute announcement is incorrect. Also, the ticketing system in use in Berlin does not allow for the traction of individual passengers though tapping in/out at stations. Therefore there is neither information about how many people are currently present inside the station, on their way down to U6 from the over ground S-Bahn service or where these people are going. Therefore the voice announcements inside the station are currently not help-ing to re-route passengers (i.e. though suggesting to use the bus or tram lines also existing). The data collection should be remodelled to collect more and more appropriate data, to create Information about passengers to better understand individual trips to therefore manage public transportation better during high-frequency times.
