Experiencing an automobile-centric environment as a pedestrian is amazing! My app would place sensors in the thousands of parking spaces within the walkshed of the Fairfield Metro train station. The sensors would record whether a car was parked in the spot at 10 minute intervals, allowing a real-time heat map to show the behavior of cars. We provide redundant and well-located space for cars to sit and we expect pedestrians to walk through massive parking lots to get to the train platform. If people were aware of how much space we waste by providing parking, it would generate data-driven conversations that might prompt authorities to rethink parking minimums near transit stops. We should have mixed use, high-density development but instead we give over all of this space so cars can sit idle! What a waste.
