My name is Ambaye Kidane. I live in the City of Toronto. 1. Check the temperature differences in US cities The study by Climate Central shows that 57 of the 60 major US cities experience measurable urban heat effects. Examples are: Las Vegas (7.3°F), Albuquerque (5.9°F), Denver (4.9°F) and Portland (4.8°F). 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? Various studies show the Greater Toronto area has experienced urban heat effects -- average air temperature in the urban core is 1-3 degrees warmer. Main contributors are: large asphalt and concrete areas; rising urbanization and reduction in vegetation; high buildings and narrow streets; and other activities that generate heat. Please see multiple images here: http://www.urbanheatislands.com/toronto 3. Which are the measures you would propose? I would propose the following: more trees and parks; increasing use of eco-roofs and advanced construction materials; reduce surface parking and increase canopy trees; and provide more transportation options. 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? The City of Toronto have various measures that mitigate urban heat island effects, including a Green Roof Bylaw requiring every new major building to have a green roof.
