The area immediately surrounding the nearest commuter rail station to where I live has thousands of parking spaces nearby in lots ranging from 170 spaces to 1186 spaces (a two level garage). I contend that this is far more parking than is needed in the area. In the interest of creating a transit-oriented district I would invite citizens to design ways to transform some of these parking spaces into high density micro dwellings. It would serve the purpose of getting people to see the built environment with different eyes by giving people permission to repurpose space reserved for cars as space reserved for people.
