Multiple layers of electrical power lines appear in this photo, including catenary wires for the commuter rail and larger pylons carrying power throughout the area. These unattractive wires and their supporting structures are everywhere and they serve as a reminder of our complete dependence on electricity. Occasional hurricanes which bring these wires down require restringing at great cost, prompting calls for putting this infrastructure underground. Each time, we are reminded that we do not live densely enough to justify the cost of replacing above ground electrical infrastructure with buried power lines.
