2.Rio de Janeiro is the city of South America most affected by climatic changes and the effects of these elevated temperatures are: increase in energy demand for cooling, as well as peak demand, general discomfort, respiratory difficulties, exhaustion and in a few cases even death. 3.In order to reduce the UHI effects I would propose an increase in green areas, as well as the number of trees in the city, changing the material used in construction to increase the reflection of sunlight and heat can also have a positive effect and using green roofs. 4.Before the Olympics in 2016 there was some interest in reducing the UHI effect researches asked for an increase in plant cover as well as an improvement in building materials, but the promises have not been fulfilled and today there is little discussion about urban heat islands and projects in Rio that explicitly work to combat them.
