1 – Allentown, PA - average 0.7°F warmer, peak 21°F warmer Boston, MA - average 1.3°F warmer, peak 15°F warmer Indianapolis, IN - average 0.6°F warmer, peak 17°F warmer Milwaukee, WI - average 1.4°F warmer, peak 18°F warmer Phoenix, AZ - average 3.2°F warmer, peak 21°F warmer 2 – In Oxford there is a significant canopy UHI effect, as the city center can be very warm at night. This is especially evident in winter. The surface heat island effect is somewhat mitigated in the city center by the old university buildings, which have a high albedo and specific heat capacity due to being built of limestone. The specific heat capacity contributes significantly to the canopy UHI effect. 3 - many of the buildings are protected due to their historical value, and altering the width of streets would be politically and culturally challenging. I would propose hanging canopies with high albedo across street canyons in the summer. 4 - The UHI effect is not seen as an issue in this city as the local climate is not severe enough for it to be an issue. Additionally, the weather station is located within the city limits, in a college.
