Below is an aerial photograph of the Port of Los Angeles (and Long Beach). Together, these two represent by far the biggest ports in the Americas. They are a crucial piece of transportation infrastructure because they are the main entry and exit point of US trade with the Pacific Rim. As such, their importance is not only felt at the local and regional level, but on a national scale. They represent billions and billions of dollars in investment, operation and improvement costs.
