FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2016-08-23 by Luis Esteban Dominguez Arribas
1- The building is at present used by the University of Valencia. We can see the main building, the geometric configuration and the use of colors, that talks us about the architectural style. The relationship between solid walls and apertures will also be necessary for the calculation of thermal and acoustic parameters. The construction materials used in the façade are natural stone, aluminum and glass. The picture show us that the building is located in a public space in the old city center (because the adjacent building typology). As we can see, the sun hits the square, which is not protected for any kind of shadows. As well, it show the kind of streetlights, the absent of cars and how young people walk through the square. 2- The tow invisible information I’d like to underline are: - The pattern of use of the building and public space, when people go into, stay and leave the building. What is the intensity of people in those spaces in every hour and day of the week? People have the same characteristics any time or their change along the day or the week… - Thermal stress of the public space. Information about geometrical shape of the square, materials used in its construction and sun's impact on the surfaces, as well as datum from on-line thermal and humidity sensors can be compiled by the municipality. With that information it is possible to calculate the thermal stress in the location and if it is compatible with people’s well-being. 3- Gathering information about thermal stress of the main public spaces of the city along the year would allow urban managers to build up a new city map with information about parameters that are linked closely with citizens well being. That knowledge can be used for re-design those spaces and optimizing and prioritizing public investment in those locations where environmental conditions are worst, especially if information about users’ behavior is also available: hard or soft surfaces, water, trees, urban element for providing shadows…
