NOTE: Picture NOT taken by me. 1. Stock: existing pool of educated young people. Flow: international college students from around the world. 2. Stock: existing information, as in the books in libraries, the digital information encoded on media, etc. Flow: new information from around the world. New publications and new digital information arriving via social media, blogs, online publications, etc. 3. Stock: the existing pool of ideas, or information combined with knowledge and know how. Unlike information, ideas have meaning. Flow: The new ideas resulting from new information and the processing made possible by the knowledge and know how. St. Louis could be made more livable and more prosperous by increasing the all three flows: more international people, more information from abroad, and, concomitantly, more ideas. St. Louis could be made more livable and more prosperous by increasing the all three flows: more international people, more information from abroad, and, concomitantly, more ideas. More knowledge and ideas are hallmarks of complexity’s arrow pointing forward. This is analogous to a richer gene pool in animal populations or greater variation in a natural ecosystem. The area would be more resilient against shocks and better able to take advantage of future opportunities.
