Three main stocks and flows influence Kuala Lumpur : migration, employment density, and food. Due to the growth of labor-intensive industries, there has been flows of guest workers from nearby countries into Kuala Lumpur. Stable stocks of these communities can be found in various pockets around KL. The movement of communities are temporal, with many of them returning to their countries in a few years once their contracts expire. Employment density is another aspect where stocks and flows can be observed. Stocks of jobs are concentrated in the CBD and various suburban centers. On the other hand, there is a dispersed flow of city dwellers into and out of these centers daily - this results in major congestion and long commute times. This is key challenge affecting the city’s liveability. Kuala Lumpur now relies on increasingly global food sources. The flow of food comes from as far afield as Australia and South Africa. It is then sold in various markets in the city, and consumed in households and restaurants - it then leaves the city as faeces / food waste.
