If you take a look on construction materials even the smallest pieces are part of something far bigger. There is no building not containing components which can be traced to several places all around the world. This example in one of many cases showing the impact of globalisation. Like many buildings located in Paris the main component is “Lutetian Limestone” which can was a common building material back in the 17th century and can be found all over France. This is probably as local as it gets considering the fact that the chances of a renovation with newer materials are pretty high. All of the other components are, at least for persons who weren’t part of the building process, more or less untraceable. The windows for example could be labelled as an Italian production, still it consists of many more parts which have their origin in several different countries. As you can see there is no fully local production anymore but rather a globalised cooperation, intended to be more efficient and cheaper but turned out to be one of the main problems we face on our way to a more sustainable world.
