The picture has been taken during a field trip to the so called „Schwabenland Tower“ - Former known as the “Gewa Tower”. The construction contains a lot of reinforced concrete to allow the height and the shape that’s broaden towards the top of the tower to provide more space in the most exclusive units. Cement as a component of concrete itself is often produced in germany. We even export about 18,5% of the cement produced in germany (VDZ). The steel used in the supporting elements and to reinforce the concrete instead is often imported from countries like China or India - the balance between ex-and import is about 50/50 (WSA). The chance that imported steel has been used in the towers construction is relatively high. Sadly the construction is very conservative and doesn’t include innovative solutions. The use of alternative, more sustainable material could also provide a better image for such famous buildings, even if the focus is to generate the maximum of profit.
