Some important stocks and flows in the city are building materials, energy or food. Various different building materials with different sources are brought into the city. In the city they amount in different types of buildings or other infrastructure. At the end of the life cycle, the buildings are demolished. The building materials can be recycled or end up in a landfill. As a consequence, they either stay within the city or flows of building material leave the city to a landfill or to other cities. The recycling of building materials might be enhanced in future. Energy production in Switzerland has various sources such as hydropower or crued oil and gas.The electricity from various sources enters the city and is used in different ways, for example for heating of buildings or transportation. The demand for energy, in particular for the heating of buildings, could be reduced in future. Food is often produced in the hinterlands or even in foreign countries. It is brought into the city and consumed by the inhabitants. Food is connected to other stocks and flows such as energy or water, but also to the production of waste and wastewater.
