The suburb in Guayaquil is a dangerous neighborhood which was born in the shores of the “Estero Salado”. It grew in disorder and without any planning. People just took a piece of land or bought it without any real papers. The construction of these houses was with wood and using the natural mangrove trunks of the zone. This material was used in the entire neighborhood and also in other constructions in the city. Later, it was protected by the government and it wasn’t allowed the use of it for construction. 1. Stocks and Flows in the suburb: people, water and wood. 2. Wood: The mangrove trunks were used irresponsible in this area of the city and it is in risk of extinction. Around the country it’s banned to use it for construction and authorities are taking good care of it. 3. A few years ago the municipality relocated people from the suburb in order to protect the “Estero Salado” (natural mangrove swamp). The people of the neighborhood weren’t happy about it, but it was for the best. The municipality gave them better houses in other area and the idea was to stop the growth disorder in the area and to preserve the “Estero Salado” (natural mangrove swamp).
