Curitiba has an efficiently BRT system with a stop just a block from were I live and another one where I work. Being close to transportation was an important factor when deciding where to live. I knew I would save money and time taking the bus to work everyday, paying extra in rent was still feasible considering costs in gas, parking and taxes for owning a car. BRT runs faster in Curitiba because traffic lights are delayed for oncoming buses, decreasing the amount of time between stops. In addition, fares are pre-paid, reducing waiting at bus stops, and waiting platforms are elevated to allow for quicker entry and exit to the bus. And most important, the busses have their own lanes, which keep the bus system independent of always present congested traffic. See attached graphic for the corresponding distance and time of my daily commute to work.
