This picture was taken in Playa del Carmen, México. Although I am not sure if whether or not the construction materials are bought overseas, there are other components that suggest globalized economy. In towns where the expat community is growing and settling, prices are given in dollars and amenities are often described in english. I consider this to be part of the globalized economy in building construction because the commodities, design and language are set to “meet standards” in developed countries. They want to make the building seem more appealing to people from all around the world by choosing a better known currency and language. The question remained is, if this price is rather higher than the average cost of an apartment in the area, marketed by builders targeting locals. My guess would be that, as people agree to buy and invest in dollars, prices will be driven higher and in some point the area will be almost inaccessible for locals earning in mexican pesos.
