1. Can you give a short overview of the national circumstances of your country? (e.g. population, land use, climate, economics, energy consumption, industry, transport etc.) Kenya is not listed among the UN Climate Change countries, but is still significantly impacted by global climate change. As a tropical country the rainy season is very important for agriculture, and they have been increasingly unreliable. The country’s poverty provides fewer opportunities to implement expensive changes, but the birth rate is dropping providing an opportunity for long term sustainable growth. The local government is promoting the use of wind, solar and geothermal energy on the national grid although power reliability remains moderate overall. Poor land use planning is causing sprawl in Nairobi, the country’s largest city and limited vehicle emissions regulations causes poor air quality in urban areas. 2. What are the main climate protection targets of your country in the report? Kenya is not listed, but the country is trying to reduce deforestation due to charcoal use (for daily cooking) by promoting alternative fuels. The impact of this initiative is minimal but if the economy continues to grow more individuals will shift to LPG due to lower indoor air pollution.
