I have chosen Alicante instead of El Campello (where I live) as it is a bigger city and you can observe in a more clear way the Heat Island Effect. 2. I have found a study that says that in the city center temperatures vary 4.5 or 5 degrees Celsius due to HI Effect, being this point the one in which the effect is higher. The reasons why are: higher density of both population and traffic, avoiding the effect of the Mediterranean see to soften the HI Effect. Another reason is the traffic that suffers the coast line, where the city center starts, as most of it has been detoured from the oldest parts of the city to avoid traffic congestions. 3. Main reasons: urban and traffic congestion, and inappropriate city distribution. 4. I am unaware of any public measure to palliate the HI Effect nowadays. I would introduce cooling pavement as a first measure, and then I'd propose a bid to introduce some small urban modifications to improve wind flow trough the narrow streets of the center.
