FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2018-08-15 by David Fiske
Pictured is the BTS skytrain that runs through the heart of Bangkok's business district. Surrounding the train line are hi-rise office and residential towers, many being built within the last 5 years, as Thailand has embraced a model of transit-oriented development (TOD). Embedded in this photo are many pieces of information related to the train and its functions, the buildings and its residents/employees, as well as the natural environment in the pictured sky and trees. Two pieces of "invisible" information are: 1) the origin and destination of the train commuters, and, 2) the schedule of energy use within the pictured buildings. This information can be useful in gaining an understanding (knowledge) of commuter patterns, enabling more effective transportation and development planning based on trends seen in the data. By understanding energy use patterns, HVAC systems in buildings can be automated to regulate electricity use and cut down on carbon emissions.
