a) Provisioning services. The city of Kongsberg is surrounded by forests which contain wild berries like blueberries and raspberries. The berries are usually ready to be eaten from late July to medio September. These berries offer the citizens that pick them nutrition and important vitamins and antiocidants, as well as some fresh air an exercise from harvesting them. Kongsberg was founded because of its rich natural deposits of raw materials, more specifically minerals like silver, which was mined for a long time. The mining operation took place in the mountain where the ski resort is located today. b) Regulating services. As previously mentioned, Kongsberg is surrounded by forest which regulate climate, improves air quality, stores co2 et cetera. c) Habitat or supporting services. The Kongsberg city and region is rich in fresh water. There is a river flowing through the city centre, and the forests and hills surrounding the city have lakes of various sizes. These provide habitats for various species of fish like trout, perch and pike among others. The various lakes and ponds also provide breeding grounds for insects, which is important for the local food chain. d) Cultural services. The surrounding forests contain a vast network of trails that can (and is) used for hiking, cycling, skiing and other activities and offer the citizens recreational opportunities.
