In India, in 2016-17, the gross electricity generated by utilities in India was 1,236.39 TWh and the total electricity generation (utilities and non utilities) in the country was 1,433.4TWh. About 75% of this required energy is generated from fossil fuels(primarily coal, oil and natural gas). The rest is either imported or produced renewable energy sources(mostly from bio waste).India has a capacity of harnessing about 148700 MW just from hydroelectric energy out of which only 44594MW is being harnessed. The energy is mostly consumed by the developing secondary(in manufacturing industries) and tertiary sectors(transportation, residential and commercial sectors). Promotion of the use of renewable sources of energy is both essential and difficult to implement with the existing political and economic situations. But we can still increase the efficiency of the existing systems by promoting green homes, eco-friendly furniture, electricity powered vehicles, promoting research in such fields where little is understood about the efficiency of the harnessing energy from natural sources. Promotion of use of solar and wind powered energy among locals and among students by better understanding the need to switch to more eco-friendly sources is essential and will prove to be more fruitful in the future.
