Most of the US cities experience a significant rise in temperature when compared to their neighboring rural regions i.e, their UHI effect is really high. Pittsburgh for example can be up to 16 degrees hotter than rural regions. Bangalore like most rural cities experiences a significant UHI which can be observed just between the urban and sub-urban regions. The high temperature especially during summer nights pose a great deal of problems and inconvenience. Rural regions have greater number of lakes and green cover when compared to the cities. This combined with the lesser carbon footprint produced from their daily activities contribute to their lesser UHI. Adopting environment friendly activities and activities to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the city have to be adopted and institutionalized so that people understand and practice these measures without external surveillance .This followed by re-empowering the city with its lakes and green cover increases not just the livability of the city but also decreases the UHI. General measures like effective garbage disposal and schemes involving 'Adopting a tree or forest cover', reinstating the lakes which were once held as the heritage of this city have been seen to effectively reduce the UHI .
