FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2018-07-22 by Tomasz Koczur
The photo depicts a typical English street from outside the city centre. Examples of such streets can be found in the whole West Midlands County (Wallsal, Coventry, West Bromwich), but also in Liverpool, Eastbourne and probably many other cities within the country. 1. Visible information 1.2 The houses are finished with brick or plaster. The windows frames are thin, made of pcv (when newer) or wood (when older) 1.3 There are 28 cars on the photo on bloth sides of the road and one pedestrian on the right side of the road. 2.2. Invisible information 2.1 The level of thermal transmittance of the thin walls and the heat losses are not visible. 2.2. Neither is the ratio between the amount of time that the cars stay by the road and of the time when they travel. 3. Becoming knowledge If the amount of heat loss was collected and quantified they could serve as a basic knowledge for developing a strategy for sustainability for the typical English housing typology. It could lead to local or central decisions for subsidising or the application of thermal insulation for houses.
