London is a densely-built urban area where there are darker surfaces such as tarmac attracting the heat. The heat, however disperses the further out you go towards the suburbs and then the countryside since there are less buildings etc to attract the sun and only slowly release it. I could only upload one image, but it is one of the countryside outside of London. It compares to my other image (not available) of central London as there are far more trees and vegetation and less buildings. This is one of the factors that contributes to UHIs. If I were to come up with an initiative to reduce the effect of UHIs, then I would introduce green walls and roofs made from plants. The vegetation would absorb much less heat and thus the buildings would be cooler and the area would also look nicer. There is, in fact, already an initiative that installs these kinds of walls and roofs. It is called Sky Garden Solutions and they have several articles on their website that point to the fact that these elements can improve a city's UHI problem.
